30/06/07
1st June
The pair of Scaup, a Whimbrel and a first
-summer Little Gull were found in Tankerness.
Three male Red-backed Shrikes and two Spotted Flycatchers were seen in Deerness.
A Cuckoo was seen in Holm.
3rd June
15 adult Gadwall were seen in Holm, along with two Swifts.
One of the male Red-backed Shrikes was still present in Deerness. A Cuckoo was found in the same area.
4th June
A flock of 154 Sanderlings in Deerness was a good count for that area, although numbers have been steadily rising in recent years. A
Bar-tailed Godwit was also present on the same beach.
Two Little Gulls, a first-summer and an adult, were seen together in Tankerness.
5th June
Spring wader passage is all but over, but a flock of 36 Ringed Plovers was seen in Deerness along with a potentially summering Whooper Swan.
6th June
Great Northern Divers regularly summer here in small numbers so it was no surprise to find one off Holm and three off Deerness.
10 Bar-tailed Godwits and two Whimbrels were seen in Deerness.
Two Little Gulls, a first-summer and an adult, were still together in Tankerness.
7th June
Lingering migrants included a Cuckoo in Holm and a White Wagtail in Tankerness.
8th June
No sign of the adult Little Gull, but the first-summer was still in Tankerness.
10th June
A first-summer Little Gull was seen in Tankerness, along with a Common Sandpiper.
11th June
A Common Sandpiper was seen in Deerness. A first-summer Iceland Gull was found with other gulls in Tankerness.
13th June
A female Red-backed Shrike in Holm was the only new bird found today. A first-summer Little Gull was seen in Tankerness.
14th June
Another Little Stint was found - this time in Deerness. Two Little Gulls (both first-summer) were seen together in Tankerness.
15th June
Apart from a White Wagtail in Tankerness there seemed to be little around - that is until Stuart Williams informed me of another wagtail - a Citrine Wagtail found by Keith Fairclough in Birsay.
16th June
Back to earth with a bump - just a first-summer Little Gull in Tankerness to report.
17th June
Two Little Gulls (both first-summer) were seen together in Tankerness, along with a White Wagtail.
18th June
Two Little Gulls (both first-summer) were seen again (presumably the same birds).
19th June
A Quail was heard singing in the early hours, in Holm.
20th June
A Curlew Sandpiper in Deerness was a bonus find in a decidedly quiet week, so far.
22nd June
A Swift was seen in Holm. A total of 69 Bar-tailed Godwits at three sites was well above the norm for this time of year. Three Little Gulls (all first-summers) were seen together in Tankerness.
23rd June
There were still two Little Gulls in Tankerness.
24th June
Different first-summer Little Gulls were seen at two sites in Tankerness.
29th June
Returning home after a spell away, things were still very quiet - although it was nice to find a family of Stonechats on the hill above the house. A Little Gull was still lingering in Tankerness.
30th June
A Whooper Swan in Deerness appears to be summering in the area. The male Stonechat was quite demonstrative and allowed a photo opportunity.
